As public figures begin to better reflect our society, the message is becoming crystal clear: representation is important. At Total Learning Center, we’re thrilled that Long Branch NJ area students can find accurate representations of dyslexic people in books. These helpful books from some notable authors will satisfy the appetite of any avid reader!
Books That Represent Dyslexia
There are many writers with dyslexia, and some have taken the time to talk about their experiences with the signs of dyslexia. Others work hard to catalogue the experiences of dyslexic people. For the middle-school student struggling with bullying and dyslexia, Trapped by Judy Spurr will create an opportunity for dialogue between parents and children, or even educators and children. Spurr used to be a reading teacher and thus creates an empathetic portrait of a struggling student.
Author: A True Story is the story of author Helen Lester, and a must-read for dyslexic students with a creative mind and a penchant for storytelling. It documents the author’s childhood struggle with writing, then her foray into education and writing children’s books. It’s a truly inspiring story that presents a welcome success story for anyone struggling with dyslexia.
Books to Help Explain Dyslexia
With so many existing stigmas and ill-fitting preconceptions about this condition, dyslexia books that help explain this challenge in ways that children can understand is a necessity. One selection is What is Dyslexia?: A Book Explaining Dyslexia for Kids and Adults to Use Together by Alan M. Hultquist, which lays out methods to help your child understand why they’re having trouble learning in school. It will also educate adult readers too by highlighting examples of the courage of children with a reading disability and providing interactive activities to make it an enriching read for everyone.
