Standardized tests have presented problematic conditions for as long as they’ve been around, but none are quite as dreaded- or as challenging to students with disabilities- as the SAT. At our Neptune tutoring center, we were thrilled when the College Board, owners of the SAT, announced this leap forward. It means that our students will find it much easier to get the testing conditions they need to show their true capabilities.
Get Accommodations Easily for Dyslexic Students in Neptune
Extra time. A separate room. Having the test read to them. Once they’ve received a dyslexia evaluation and begun our courses, Neptune students and their parents become familiar with some of the conditions necessary to help them do their best on a test. For so long, the College Board neglected to make these changes easily attainable to the students that needed these adaptations the most. Beginning January of this year, the College Board finally addressed the needs of the dyslexic student. These changes also apply as necessary to the PSAT 10, PSAT/NMSQT, SAT subject tests, and AP exams.
This will come as a relief to so many. Parents, tutors, teachers, students, and college counselors alike all want to see every pupil succeed, and any step taken to assist bright students struggling with a reading disability is progress. According to Education Week, this change stemmed from the increase in states that are adopting these tests as graduation requirements, typically in their junior year. Frequent complaints about their lack of accommodations for eligible students aroused the suspicions of the United States Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. The College Board has modified their approach accordingly.
Clearing the Way to Excellence
As an institution that repeatedly sees students struggling to live up to their potential, we’re confident that receiving these accommodations easily will make the SAT a little less daunting for our students. We hope that our pupils, and their schools, will take full advantage of these opportunities. As the school year rapidly speeds ahead, we’re happy that eager learners have one less thing on their minds.
