Dyslexia has always presented a complex challenge with many facets. However, as more research is done, we’re finding more and more out about it. Our Red Bank area learning center wants to help you set the record straight when it’s time to talk about your child’s dyslexia.
Challenge Conventions
Common misconceptions plague people with dyslexia. When others make these assumptions, it’s usually not out of malice, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t explain the facts to them in a way that’s diplomatic and informative. It’s all part of moving towards a world free of stigma! Here’s how Red Bank area residents can help their friends, neighbors, and family better understand dyslexia.
Seemingly, the most common belief many misinformed people hold about dyslexia is that it’s as straightforward as seeing letters backwards. This is not true, and it’s helpful to point out to others that individuals with dyslexia may have trouble naming a letter, and not all dyslexics see letters backwards. It is a reading difficulty, but has more to do with putting letters and words together than how the letters themselves look.
Set the Record Straight
The most hurtful element of the stigma attached to dyslexia is the assumption that people with this challenge may not be as intellectually capable as others. This is simply not the case. Though it may take longer for dyslexic children to learn how to read, people with dyslexia are as bright and hard-working as their peers. With the high correlation that has been discovered between dyslexia and creativity, the world can expect resourcefulness and insight from people with dyslexia!
